April 27th:
There is no meeting today as students should be turning in their service hours for Semester 2 and submitting their individual service project reflections. This time is used for advisers to verify hours and that students are in good-standing as members as the end of the year draws closer. 
We are pleased to announce our new members and induction information will be sent out soon. These students should have received a letter in their iLead class informing them that they have made it into NJHS. 
2021/2022 New Members
January 19th:
Only officers met this week; however, applications have opened for those interested in joining NJHS. Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher and no disciplinary issues. Applications can be downloaded from this page or students can ask their iLead teacher for an application. Teacher input forms (on the application) are turned in to Ms. Bower by the teacher completing the form. Those are NOT given back to the applicant. The letter of recommendation should be from a former teacher or someone outside of school who is NOT a family member. We are hoping to have a Q&A Zoom for students who are interested in applying. This would take place during iLead so as not to interfere with their academics. 
January 12th:
We went over the requirements for maintaining membership and informed students that they need to have 10 more service hours and complete an individual service project before the end of the year. Evaluation meetings will take place in April to ensure students are in good-standing for next year or for NHS. Students were reminded about shirts, opportunities to serve as tutors on campus, and that they have tasks that should be completed on the weeks that we don't have meetings. 
January 7th:
Our NJHS T-shirts arrived! Students can stop by Ms. Bower's classroom with $11 (cash or check-made out to RMA) to pick their shirt up! Can't wait to see all of the members wearing these!
December 15th:
We were not able to have a holiday party this year, but we are proud of all of our NJHS students and hope they enjoy the break! Students who emailed Ms. Bower for an extension should make sure service logs are uploaded on Google Classroom by the end of the month. 
December 8th: 
A few more service project opportunities were shared with students and there is more flexibility this year with turning in hours. Students were able to request extensions until the end of the month if they needed more time to complete 10 hours of service. Students can be put on probation for not fulfilling the duties as a member. 
December 1st:
We discussed turning in service hours this month and answered any questions about the individual service projects. Those who attended the LEAD Conference shared some of their take-aways and what they learned or what inspired them. 
November 17th: 
Task #5 was posted asking students to pick up trash in their own neighborhood/community and to post a picture on our Google Classroom page. Students earned service hours for this. This year we asked students to brainstorm projects that could be done at home so students can still volunteer despite limitations that now exist due to Covid-19. 
November 2nd:
Video recordings of the three (3) NJHS Zoom meetings that we've had so far this year were posted on the NJHS Google Classroom page. Students who have missed 1 or more of these have one week to watch them. This is a way we are being flexible with attendance this year as we understand attending meetings may be a challenge due to Covid and meetings not being on campus. 
October 29th/30th:
Thanks to a grant, students were able to sign up to deliver candy bags that my iLead students assembled. The grant provided us with 50+ pounds of candy and required students to spread cheer by distributing it around their community (#heartwarminghalloween and #youthsavehalloween). NJHS members brought these bags to a variety of locations including Heritage Park Rehabilitation Center, Centerstone Hospital & Addiction Center for Children, and Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Additionally, this candy was passed out to the homeless on 9th St., 14th St., and to members of the community along Riverwalk. 
October 28th:
A SignUp Genius was posted on our NJHS Google Classroom so students can sign up to volunteer on-campus to earn service hours by helping RMA staff members. 
October 27th:
We had our 3rd full-group Zoom meeting! Ms. Bower went through a list of service opportunities so that members know how they can earn volunteer hours before December. Hours from last year cannot be counted. The individual service project requirement was also described and there is a form that students must complete so that the NJHS advisers can approve each project before students begin. Some students will be taking over our tab collection to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House. Other students will be leading a school-wide drive to collect food for Feeding Empty Little Tummies (FELT). We can't wait to see what other ideas students come up with. This is done individually or with 1 other NJHS member. 
October 21st:
Task #3 was posted a day late! Our apologies! Students explore NJHS sites and some projects for inspiration and then need to comment about which project they found most interesting. Since there was also a tech issue with Task #3, students have until 11/2 at 11:59pm to complete it. 
October 14th:
Letters for students and their families to sign regarding this year's NJHS Expectations/Requirements were distributed via iLead or emailed to eLearners. Students also need to pay the $20 dues that are mentioned in this letter. Once the form and money has been turned in, students should complete the Dues Survey that is posted on our NJHS Google Classroom page. 
October 13th:
Today was our 2nd full-group Zoom meeting. New members were reminded to submit photos wearing "dress for success" attire for the induction ceremony, which will take place on Thursday, October 22nd from 5-6:30PM on Zoom. Current members should plan to attend too. Please email Ms. Bower if your child is unable to attend. The link for the Zoom meeting can be found on our Google Classroom page.
At today's meeting, members were informed about annual dues. Students can bring in $20 cash or a check made out to Rowlett Middle Academy (write "NJHS Dues" on the Memo line). Dues should be turned in by Monday, October 19th. eLearners can drop off money to the front office. Students on campus can ask their iLead teacher to place dues in Ms. Bower's mailbox or can drop it off to her in room 412. There will be a separate fee for T-shirts and more information on this will be shared soon. 
Finally, at today's meeting we went over the log students will use to track service hours. This is posted in Google Classroom as well as on this site. 
October 6th: 
Today only our officers had a meeting; however, Task 2 was posted for all other members on our Google Classroom page (under Classwork). Students should complete the tasks assigned during the week that they are posted. Members can be placed on probation if they are not completing tasks as we are using these in place of weekly meetings and since we are being flexible with attendance this year as we understand not all members can attend the Zoom meetings. Future tasks will also be ways for members to earn service hours.  
September 30th:
On Tuesday, September 29th, we had our first official NJHS meeting for the 2020-2021 school year. Since our induction ceremony from last spring has not yet occurred due to Covid-19, we decided to allow new members to run as officers since they would have officially been inducted if the ceremony had taken place as planned in March/April. Students gave heartwarming speeches and it was definitely not easy to vote with so many incredible candidates. We now have all of the officer positions filled and names are listed below. 
September 15th:
I am excited to announce that we are ready to kick-off NJHS this year. Thank you for being patient as we adjusted to new teaching schedules and models during these first few weeks of school.
Attached you'll find the schedule for this year. Due to Covid-19, we will be meeting virtually and have therefore decided to meet biweekly on Tuesdays. Meetings will take place from 4:00-4:30 via Zoom and students will have assigned tasks on the weeks that we don't meet. *Please note officers will have weekly Zoom meetings.
This week we will begin with officer elections. Returning officers Katelyn Craft and Sierra Skinner will serve as co-presidents this year. Students who have already been inducted are invited to run for Vice President, Secretary, Historian, or Treasurer. Those interested in running should download the application and upload their campaign video to FlipGrid by 4:00pm on Thursday, September 17th. (https://flipgrid.com/bower6923)
Information regarding induction will be sent out once we have voted on officers since they play a significant role in the induction ceremony. Mrs. Ogilbee will not be an adviser this year, but I'd love to give her a huge shout-out for creating the NJHS chapter at RMA! She has done so much to establish the group and to strengthen students' leadership skills. Gosia Stoner, an incredible 6th grade ELA teacher will be serving as our new adviser.

National Junior Honor Society

The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is one of the nation's premier organizations established to recognize outstanding middle school students. More than just an honor roll, NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service and character.  The purpose of this chapter shall be to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in the students of Rowlett Middle Academy.

Students in the sixth, seventh grades who meet the academic and service requirements may be eligible for membership in the National Junior Honor Society.
